About Mi'kmaw Cultural Foundation Inc

Vision
The Mi’kmaw Cultural Foundation exists to preserve and promote the culture and heritage of the Mi’kmaq of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Mission
We strive to inspire our people to proudly embrace their heritage and empower them to continue the traditions of our Ancestors.

Like other First Nations, the Mi’kmaq have a long and rich history that includes unique cultural, social, political and spiritual traditions. However, centuries of European contact have caused many of these traditions to be eroded and lost.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the Mi`kmaq have experienced this loss of Indigenous identity by exclusion from recognition as status Indians, which resulted from the province’s Terms of Union with Canada in 1949. The formation of the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band in 2011 gave people a new opportunity to self-identify and discover their Mi’kmaw heritage.

The Mi’kmaw Cultural Foundation was formed in 2014 to support Mi’kmaw culture in Newfoundland and Labrador. We are making every effort to reach out to individuals with limited knowledge of their heritage, and providing them with information and experiences that will assist them in the discovery process. We also seek to unite the people who have the experience and knowledge of Mi’kmaw traditions.

The Foundation exists to ensure cultural documentation, and promote the involvement of youth and Elders in cultural activities. We strive to inspire our people to proudly embrace their heritage, to empower them to continue the traditions of our Ancestors and restore the spirit of Mi’kmaw culture in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Establishment

The Mi’kmaw Cultural Foundation (previously known as Qalipu Cultural Foundation) was incorporated on May 23, 2014, by the Chief & Council of Qalipu First Nation. The foundation was created as an arms-length organization, governed by a board of directors with the goal to eventually become autonomous.

The foundation was established, incorporated and grated charity status for the following purposes;

I. to preserve and promote the culture and heritage of the Mi’kmaq of Newfoundland and Labrador.

II. to educate the Mi’kmaq, and the public at large, about Mi’kmaw culture and heritage;

III. to protect, promote, and preserve the history, language, traditions, and beliefs of the Mi’kmaw people; and

IV. to undertake such activities ancillary and incidental to the charitable purposes and objectives of the Foundation as will assist the Foundation in the achievement of these purposes and objectives.
