Indigenous-Owned Exporting SMEs in Canada: A Joint Publication by the Office of the Chief Economist of Global Affairs Canada and the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business

In partnership with the Office of the Chief Economist of Global Affairs Canada (OCE-GAC), the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) is pleased to announce the release of their joint publication titled Indigenous-owned Exporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Canada. This report reviews the characteristics of Indigenous SMEs involved in trade, and identifies opportunities for enhanced federal policy and program design to support Indigenous business performance in international markets. For Indigenous firms operating in a small open economy like Canada, internationalization can be an important strategy for business growth and success.

The Indigenous-owned Exporting Small and Medium Enterprises report presents results based on data from the Aboriginal Business Survey developed and conducted by the CCAB in 2015 of over 1,100 Indigenous-owned businesses. This research provides a data-driven review of current Indigenous SME activities and will serve as the basis for government policy and international business promotion program development, with an aim to supporting and nurturing Indigenous commercial activities.
